Beware of Rogue Traders

These so-called locksmiths are mainly advertising on Google Sponsored listing, promising a low call-out fee, but in actual fact, this will rise considerably once on site, and they use all kinds of tactics to get you to pay for parts that are not needed!!

All we can do as a company is warn potential customers of this because our complaints to Google / Trading Standards & BBC Watchdog have gone unanswered.

Most frequently asked questions

What's your actual response time for lockouts?
Honestly, it depends on where you are and what we’re dealing with at the time. Most lockouts we handle within 30-45 minutes, but if we’re already on another emergency job or you’re in a more remote village, it could be an hour. We’ll always provide you with a realistic timeframe when you call—not a sales pitch—and we’ll send you updates via text if we’re running behind. Book Now!
I'm locked out but my phone's about to die. What do I tell you?
Your exact address (including postcode), your phone number, and ideally a backup number for someone who can meet us if your phone dies. If you’re at a property with multiple flats or a difficult location to find, please mention that as well. Don’t worry about describing your lock over the phone—we can’t diagnose that remotely anyway.
Do you actually carry locks with you or do I have to wait?
We carry the most common residential locks (Yale night latches, 5-lever mortice locks, Euro cylinders, UPVC mechanisms) in our van. If you have something unusual—such as a high-security Abloy or an old Chubb detector lock—we may need to order parts, but we can at least get you back inside and temporarily secure the door on the same day.
Can you open my door without breaking anything?
In about 90% of lockouts, yes. If you’ve got a standard Yale lock and you’re locked out, we can usually pick or bypass it. Euro cylinders can often be picked or bumped. Old mortice locks are trickier but still often non-destructive. Where it gets messy: if you’ve already tried to force it and damaged the mechanism, if it’s a high-security lock specifically designed to resist picking, or if the lock has failed internally and is seized. We always try non-destructive methods first.
I've just bought a house. Do I really need to change the locks or is that just a sales tactic?
You absolutely should. Even if the seller seems trustworthy, think about everyone who’s had keys over the years: their kids, their cleaner, their builder, the estate agent, the previous owner’s family members. At least one of those keys is probably still floating around. Plus, you have no idea if the previous owner lost a set at some point and never mentioned it. Rekeying is cheap insurance—usually under £100 for a standard front door.
What's the difference between British Standard locks and insurance-approved locks?
British Standard (BS3621 for mortice locks, BS8621 for nightlatches) is the testing standard that insurance companies typically require. An “insurance-approved” lock means it meets your insurer’s requirements, which is usually BS3621. So they’re basically the same thing, just different ways of saying it. Check your home insurance policy—it’ll specify what standard you need. If you don’t have BS3621 locks and you get burgled, your insurer might reduce or refuse your claim.
A key's snapped off in my lock. Can I get it out myself or will I make it worse?
If more than 3-4mm is sticking out, you can try gripping it with needle-nose pliers. If it’s flush or recessed, stop there—you’ll likely push it deeper or damage the lock mechanism trying to dig it out. We’ve got proper extraction tools that hook or grip the key from inside the lock. Cost to extract is usually around £60-80 if the lock’s undamaged. If you’ve already had a go and pushed it in further or damaged the pins, we might need to drill it out and replace the cylinder.
I've lost my keys. My neighbour says I can just get copies cut—is that cheaper than changing the lock?
Sure, if you lost them in your house or somewhere completely random. However, if there’s any chance someone could identify whose keys they are and where you live—such as if you lost them with your gym membership card or near your house—you should change the locks. Getting new keys cut when your old ones are lost is a massive security risk. Anyone who finds them could try local houses or follow you home one day. Not worth the risk for the sake of £80.
My uPVC door won't lock properly. Does the whole mechanism need replacing?
Not always. Often it’s misalignment—the door’s dropped on its hinges, or the frame’s shifted slightly, and now the locks aren’t meeting properly. We can usually adjust the hinges and realign things in about 30 minutes for £70-90. If the actual gearbox has failed (common in doors over 10 years old), then yes, the mechanism needs to be replaced. We can’t tell you which one it is over the phone, but we can diagnose it in about 30 seconds when we inspect it.
Are smart locks actually secure or just a gimmick?
Decent ones are secure, cheap ones are rubbish. Yale, August, and Nuki make solid smart locks with proper encryption. The advantage isn’t that they’re more secure than a good traditional lock—it’s the convenience and control. You can let someone in remotely, get alerts when the door’s unlocked, and you don’t need to hide spare keys under the mat. The disadvantage is that they require batteries (which often die at the worst moment), and if you’re not tech-savvy, they can be frustrating. We fit them, but always with a key backup option in place.
My landlord hasn't changed the locks since the last tenant. Can you do it without their permission?
Legally, no. You’d be changing their property without consent. But you can ask them to do it (they should), or ask permission to do it yourself and keep the original locks to refit when you leave. If they refuse, you could install additional security, such as a door chain or a portable door lock that doesn’t require permanent installation. Not ideal, but better than nothing.
You say you're mobile—does that mean you don't have a shop I can come to?
Correct, we come to you. The advantage for you is we’re not paying shop rent and rates, so we can keep prices lower. The downside is you can’t browse locks or drop keys off for cutting. But honestly, most people prefer us coming to them anyway—especially if you’re locked out or the job’s being done at your property. Book Now!
